Lisa Lane, an early star of American chess who was a two-time United States women’s champion and the first chess player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated, died on Feb. 28 at her home in Carmel, N.Y., in Putnam County. Her death was confirmed by the town clerk’s office in nearby Kent, N.Y., which registered her death. Ms. Lane was a late bloomer in chess. Within two years, she had won the United States women’s championship. Wherever she went, people commented on her looks as much as on her chess ability, if not more so.

NEW YORK (AP) — It has been 25 years since the body of Matthew Shepard was discovered in Laramie, Wyoming. “The Laramie Project” is a poignant mix of real news reports, and actors portraying friends, family, police officers, killers and other Laramie residents. “The Laramie Project,” one of the most frequently performed plays in high schools, has been performed in more than 20 countries and translated into more than 13 languages. “Precisely because it wasn’t about Matthew Shepard, precisely because it was about the town of Laramie is why it continues to resonate,” says Kaufman. He had a blank expression as he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs by members of the U.S. A July 20 article in the New York Times contained excerpts from Ellison's personal Google documents prior to FTX's collapse. She described being "unhappy and overwhelmed" with her job and feeling "hurt/rejected" from her personal break-up with Bankman-Fried. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan announced the decision at a hearing in federal court in Manhattan, less than two months before the scheduled October fraud trial. He rejected a defense request to delay Bankman-Fried's detention pending appeal of the bail revocation. Bankman-Fried has been largely confined to his parents' Palo Alto, California, home on $250 million bond since his December 2022 arrest. Kaplan said he was concerned that Bankman-Fried showed the writings to the reporter during an in-person meeting at his parents' home. Bankman-Fried sat with his shoulders hunched, leaning forward on the table and fidgeting with a Post-It note as he heard the judge order him detained.

U.S. Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene did not include a “nationwide pornography ban” in the debt ceiling bill, contrary to claims circulating online. Reuters found no evidence that Greene is currently taking steps to remove the Miller Test or establish a pornography ban. No major news outlets covering the debt ceiling negotiations (tinyurl.com/2kmmynxa) reported on this. On June 3, President Joe Biden signed a bill that suspends the government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, averting what would have been its first-ever default (here). There is no evidence that Greene is planning to include a “nationwide pornography ban” in the debt ceiling bill.

A delivery driver for Amazon was found dead after an apparent animal attack Monday in Missouri, and deputies shot and killed two aggressive dogs, the Ray County sheriff said. Deputies were called to a home in Excelsior Springs, a town of around 10,000, around 7 p.m. after neighbors reported that an Amazon van had been parked there for several hours, Sheriff Ray Childers said. A man's body was found in a yard, as were two highly aggressive dogs, he said. The owners of the residence were not home, and it appears they are out of town, Childers said. In Florida in August, a U.S. postal worker died after having been attacked by five dogs, officials there said.
